Chronicles of the Crown

The month of January was most definitely one of the high points in my year as your Queen. Early in the month, I represented the Hernando De Soto Historical Society at the Miss Manatee County Fair Pageant, where former Queen's Court Member Jennie Ozark was crowned the new Fair Queen. Just a few days later, I traveled to Tallahassee with The Hern, Captain and Queen Mum to attend Springtime Tallahassee's 12th Night Ball. Here, the new Andrew Jackson and Rachel were unveiled for the upcoming year and presented to the audience. We will be returning to Tallahassee again in the very near future to attend more Springtime festivities, including their annual parade.

Of course, a trip to Tallahassee is not complete without a visit to Johnny and Barbie Jordan's house (aka The Jordan Inn). For those of you who have not been lucky enough to meet the Jordans, I will give you a little background information on the special relationship they share with De Soto. Barbie and Johnny have been opening their home to members of De Soto, as well as past and current Royal Families for many years. They were even given the "Hernando De Soto Award" which was very, very much deserved. Every time we visit Tallahassee, I feel so welcome and right at home because of Barbie and Johnny's extraordinary hospitality. I don't think we could say it enough, so on behalf of the entire society: Thank you for all you do!

Immediately upon return from Tallahassee, I attended Queens Court Interviews at the Bradenton Country Club. I met many amazing young ladies and I wish I could claim them all for Queen's Court, of course, but there are only 10 spots. So now it is my privilege to recognize the 10 ladies who will be competing for the coveted title of De Soto Queen: Emily Brasfield, Megan Briggs, Lauren Craton, Alexus Dan, Shea Goodman, Elizabeth Ivey, Alanna Massey, Heather Ripley, Lauren Routh and Jennifer Squire. Congratulations ladies! No matter what your future holds, live in the moment and realize it is such an honor to be a member of Queens Court!

We wrapped up the month of January in St. Paul, Minnesota for Winter Carnival-- "The Coolest Celebration on Earth". Laz Gomez, Richard and Kathy Burkholz, Richard and Maria Eurice, Mark and Joan Hildebrant joined Vince and Carmen, Noelle and myself in the festivities. We had a wonderful time and I am so pleased to announce that we all arrived home safely, with no extended hospital stays or broken bones, seeing how that seems to be a tradition when DeSoto visits St. Paul. I am sure you are all wondering what the weather was like and lets just say "we brought the heat", literally. The temperatures were in the 20s- 30s (no, I did not leave out the negative sign) and when we left, they were having a "St. Paul Heatwave" with temperatures in the high 30s and 40s. The Winter Carnival Coronation was so beautiful and I am anxiously awaiting the Royal Family's arrival to Bradenton in April.

The friendships I have already made this year and continue to make as the months pass by mean so much to me. Just when I think I have "met them all" ... I haven't and that is the best part of being your Queen. Behind another door or around the corner, there is so much more to experience and there is never a dull moment.

It is hard to believe I am coming down the home stretch, but I know every moment will be one to cherish.

Until next time,
Queen Ellie
