Counting Calories
Why put off loosing those extra pounds, when each day that goes by adversely impacts your health, and the issue just gets worse? First, start by looking at your caloric intake. Start avoiding extra calories when and where you can. Will a few hundred calories a day really make that much difference? If you remember that 1 pound of fat is equal to about 3500 calories, then those extra 200 calories a day will add up to an extra pound of weight gain in about 17 or 18 days. As you can see, those extra calories quickly add up! If you don’t get control of those unnecessary calories on a daily basis - you could easily end up with an extra 20 pounds by the end of one year! On the other hand, eating 175 fewer calories a day would mean that you could lose a pound every 20 days. Or if you kept your eating habits the same, but burned an extra 175 calories a day by exercising more, you could lose a pound every 20 days. That ends up being an annual weight loss of 18-20 pounds!
What does 200 calories look like? Here are a few common food choices that hover around the 200-calorie mark; Subway 6 inch Ham- 290 calories, Taco Bell Soft beef taco - 190 calories, McDonald's Small cheeseburger - 310 calories, Burger King Whopper Jr. - 290 calories, Wendy's Kid's ham or turkey and cheese sandwich - 245 calories, and the Pizza Hut Thin and Crispy Veggie Lovers slice - 180 calories.
Whether you cut calories, or increase your exercise to burn them, loosing weight (or gaining!) is all about your daily caloric intake. Find out how many calories you burn doing your favorite activities at Balance Pilates and Yoga - or how long you should do an activity to lose weight. A six month long study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Redman, et.al., Effects of Calorie Restriction…, 1/2007) confirmed that weight loss is based on calories. Your caloric intake needs to be less than your calories exerted.
